My mother makes them using a crochet needle. Those of us who know crochet in our family do it only by seeing at a piece, so I know she makes the mat without taking the strand on the crochet needle – those following theory must be calling it dc, I am not too sure. She makes these mats using jute ropes, strips of sarees or even clean old dresses. Sarees are most beneficial because the strips are long and the knots less. The rug is then backed up with some strong material, which also hides the wrong side. She is very deft and finishes mats as she views TV. Her mats are a delight and we put them in cupboards instead of on the floor, for fear of making them dirty.
