What is Metal Embossing? How to get Started with Metal Embossing

17

Embossing is the art of creating an artwork on a metal sheet. You get an embossing metal sheet in any art shop. The sheet is not very thick, but it is thicker than an aluminum foil. It should be thick enough that it doesn’t make holes in it when you jab it with a blunt pointed object.

The materials you will need for embossing are these –

* Metal embossing aluminum sheet
* Embossing Tools
* Ball pointed pen
* Trace of the design
* Blanket or cushion
* Golden anti rust liquid / anti-rust paint
* Cotton
* Glue and Brush
* Kerosene
* Tar

You’ll get embossing tools and the paint in any art shop.

You’ll also need a blunt pointed object, such as a star shaped screwdriver, or an old ball pen (with no ink in it). This is used to create punches on the sheet to give an outline of the picture on it, without creating any holes in the sheet.

Stick the trace of the design to the four corners of the aluminum sheet. Applying force draw  over the trace so that the impression of the design comes out on the metal  sheet prominently. Put dots around the design with the ball pen using force. This dots around the embossed figure will make the art look more attractive.

Applying golden anti rust on the background Keep a blanket or cushion on the table and place the reverse side of the picture on it and emboss the picture by pressing hard  with the embossing tool. When it is turned the on the right side, figures will be slightly projecting (embossed).After embossing pour tar in the other side and let it dry. This is done so that the image stays embossed.  Now paint the out lines of the pictures with black colour. Colour the background of the picture with golden anti rust. Take some cotton and keep it inside a piece of cotton cloth and tie it.  This can be used to dip the golden rust and applied on the background thickly so that the background will have a dark appearance. To give lighter shade, mix little kerosene to the golden anti rust and apply it on the back ground as shown in the final picture.

Many tools are shown in the picture. We can select the tool depending upon the design which we want to do.

  2. HI this metal embossing i didnt understand, could u explain me still more clearly. Where we’ll get the tar, and if we are hving the design straight away we can trace it on aluminium sheet i mean just like carbon tracing. if that is so which side to pour the tar. Can u explain me

    thanks

    • You will get tar in hard ware shop.
      1) Usually for metal embossing you don’t trace the design using carbon paper.
      2)Tar is poured on the reverse side. Tar is poured so once its dried the embossed part will remain embossed.

  3. that means first step is on the aluminium sheet we have to pour the tar make it dry for one day and then later trace on the tar and in the front part will be embossed.

    Is that u want to tel :-)

    • Please do read How to do properly. The first step is – Stick the trace of the design to the four corners of the aluminum sheet. Applying force draw over the trace so that the impression of the design comes out on the metal sheet prominently. Put dots around the design with the ball pen using force. This dots around the embossed figure will make the art look more attractive…..
      If you can’t still understand the steps then you need to find a teacher near your place to teach you in person.
      The previous comment I had answered to what u had asked me.

    • Hi Ramya,30 guage aluminium sheet or 0.3mm aluminium sheet, that will be ideal for embossing. You can give 1 mm sheet a try.
